Frugal Friday: How to Make Foaming Hand Wash for Pennies

how to make foaming hand soap

Recently I was given a $10 gift card to Bath & Body Works. I use to shop there back when I was building debt. Since I have been working on paying down debt and living a frugal lifestyle, BBW has not been in my budget. I prefer to buy my beauty products at the grocery store or a drug store where I can use a coupon.

While I was there, I decided to buy some foaming hand soap. I have read in the past that it could be made rather inexpensively and I thought this was the best way to save on hand soap. I have boys and they are REALLY good at wasting soap (often times, full bottles!) so I wanted to make sure the hand soap we are using maximizes our dollars.

Here’s how I did it.

1. Purchase a bottle of regular liquid hand soap. In my case, I decided to try Dawn Dish Soap with Olay Hand Renewal. My mom has always had Dawn at her kitchen sink for hand washing and this is a habit that I have continued at my home. I thought that this would work just as well in my bathroom. (I don’t worry about the antibacterial additives that you find in soap these days. I think a good portion of that is unnecessary. Soap works just fine on it’s own.)

I purchased an 9 oz bottle at my grocery store using a 75cent off coupon that was doubled. I paid 29 cents for the bottle and it will make about 4 batches of foaming hand soap. YMMV (your mileage may vary) on how much you can purchase this bottle for. There are often deals at my local store that would get bigger bottles for about the same price (if you buy multiples) or if you catch the smaller bottle on sale. No matter the sale, you should be able to fill a bottle of hand soap for anywhere from free to a few pennies.

2. Add about one inch of hand soap to the foaming bottle.

3. Fill the bottle with water until you are almost to the top.

4. Shake until well mixed.

5. Wash Hands regularly!

I have been using hand soap this way for months and don’t even get upset when my youngest decides to “wash” the bathroom mirror for me. He’s such a big helper!

Hope you enjoy this Frugal Friday post!

This is great! My kids (4 and 1) love to pump out our hand soap in the bathroom, and I’m always replacing it. I’m going to try this! (BTW, I love the Frugal Friday series!)

That is a pretty cool idea. In my house we use the motion activated hand soaps, but this sounds just as interesting and a lot less expensive!

That’s a great idea! I live with 2 rather large guys and they use up the soap like there is no tomorrow! Which is good because I know they have clean hands, but geez I’m going broke here! I’ll definitely give this a try!
