Be Epic and other Great Lessons from #FinCon11

October 4, 2011

How does one sum up a weekend with so much greatness?

I could try by telling you about each person that I met and how great they and their blogs are. I could go into what I’ve learned from all the presenters. Or I could tell you what plans I have for this blog.

I’m not going to do any of that. Trust that I had a fabulous weekend. I learned some amazing things that will be great for myself, this blog and The Debt Princess brand.

I do want to share with you one simple, yet amazing moment for me. Pat Flynn of SmartPassiveIncome.com ended the first Financial Blogger Conference with two words. Two very simple words that have run through my mind since the applauding began.

“Be Epic!”

I learned something from every single person I had contact with at FinCon. Every. Single. Person.

But the main takeaway that I have is to strive to “be epic.”

I will use lessons that I learned from J.D. Roth of GetRichSlowly.com about the power of a story. I will take the advice of Will Chen from Wisebread.com to increase my page views. I will look for better ways to monetize my blog and myself by building my brand and moving beyond this blog thanks to Kelly Whalen (TheCentsiblelife.com) and Julia Scott (Bargainbabe.com).

I can do all of this because:

The conference was epic. (Thanks Phil, PTMoney.com)

The people were epic. (Thank you Andrea, SoOverDebt.com, Brad, EnemyofDebt.com, Travis, OurJourneytoZero, com & so many others.)

The content was epic. (Thanks to every single person who presented.)

The food was epic. (Thanks Marriott, Schaumburg, IL.)

The whole weekend was epic. (Thanks to the 250+ in attendance at FinCon11)

I was so lucky to get the chance to attend. I was so lucky to be able to meet everyone, to listen to the presenters and to be inspired. Inspired to continue educating others to the dangers of debt by using my story. Inspired to move beyond just this blog and help bring change to the lives of others who are in debt.

And I hope that while I do it, I’m going to “BE EPIC.”

*I in no way wanted to leave out all the great bloggers, company representatives and brands that I spoke with over the weekend, I just don’t have the space for it all. If we spoke, you know we connected and we’ll be in touch, I’m sure of it!

I totally agree! I’ve been thinking about “being EPIC” since Sunday as well. By the way, thanks for addressing the elephant in the room during the affiliate panel!

I wish I could take credit for that Cathy. I said I was going to do it and I had been whispering with Jackie Walters about doing it but in the end, she busted out the question. You can find her on twitter @JackieWalters .

I’ve been thinking about how we can always do just a little bit better after Pat’s great demonstration about how we can always reach a little bit higher..

So reach higher and BE EPIC!

That reaching up exercise was the most perfect way to animate the statement. I totally agree. I hope that I always remember it.

It was great being at the conference and meeting so many bloggers, including you.

There were so many things that I learned at the conference, and I need to be able to incorporate them into my blogs. Let’s hope we can all do that!

It was so empowering, wasn’t it? I want more time in my days so I can tackle everything that I want to do. I have website ideas, blog topics to write, an ebook idea, collaboration ideas. TOO many ideas to tackle on top of kids, life and grad school.
